Save Money Changing Your Own Oil

Changing the oil in your car. It’s something we all have to do, whether we like it or not. The simple fact is engines need lubrication to function properlyIAn oil change is the most common knowledge of on going vehicle maintenance. Without it, parts and pistons begin to overheat and work harder than they were ever intended to. That causes damage which leads to breakdowns, and we all know what happens when your car breaks down.

To avoid these problems, here are five reasons to change your own oil:

1) Money. There’s no doubt doing it yourself can save you cash. Why pay someone else to do something you can do? All you need to do is buy four or five quarts of oil. The majority of the fee you pay to have this service performed is labor and the time involved. Since it’s just you, there’s no cost.

2) Time. Although the above reason can be debated by those who say time is money. You need to be willing to spend some time doing it, especially if it’s new to you. Unlike a service center which only may take them 10 minutes because of their access to state of the art tools and equipment. But there are other variables to consider. Travel time there and back needs to be considered, as does finding a day you can do it, plus waiting for the customers in front of you in line. After a few time, you’ll be fast too.

3) Education. A car is made up of many systems, some easy and some complex. The more you know about your vehicle will make it easier to talk to your mechanic. It will be far easier to judge whether someone is trying to take advantage of you if you understand what he or she is talking about.

4) Ease. It’s really not that hard to change your oil. It involves sliding under your car, unscrewing a cap, draining the oil that comes out into a pan, putting the cap back on, pouring new oil into your car, and disposing of the oil that came out. Most communities have several places to return and recycle oil. A quick Internet search will show you where. They also often have designated days for folks to take care of their mess.

5) Grubby. That’s right; I said mess a second ago. It can be a dirty job, but sometimes it’s fun to get a little dirt under your nails. What’s that torn pair of jeans and ratty shirt for if not this? Surely not a date. Doing the work yourself can be a rewarding and satisfying experience.

However, changing your oil is not for everyone. Whatever the reasons, there’s no shame in that. Maybe one day you need one and you just don’t have the time or energy. That doesn’t mean you can’t to it the next time. But if you do need someone to do it, there are plenty of places that perform auto repair in Aurora, IL.
